September is recognized as Suicide Prevention Month, a time for communities across the country to pause, reflect, and act. Behind every statistic is a real person—a friend, a family member, a neighbor, or a co-worker. At Living Waters Inc, we believe that by sharing knowledge and offering compassion, we can help prevent suicide and bring hope to those who are struggling.
The Reality Behind the Numbers
The numbers are sobering. In 2022, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 49,000 lives—that’s one person every 11 minutes. Among young people ages 10 to 34, suicide is the second leading cause of death. And for every life lost, there are countless others who wrestle silently with thoughts of suicide or survive a nonfatal attempt. These numbers tell us one thing clearly: prevention is not just important, it is urgent.
Learning the Warning Signs
Suicide doesn’t always come without signals. Often, there are warning signs—some subtle, others more direct. A person may talk about wanting to die or feeling hopeless. They may pull away from friends or stop taking part in activities they once loved. Some turn to drugs or alcohol to cope, while others experience drastic changes in sleep or mood. At times, people give away possessions or speak as though they are saying goodbye.
When we notice these signs, our response matters. Reaching out—gently, compassionately, and without judgment—can open the door to hope.
What You Can Do
You don’t have to be a counselor to make a difference. Sometimes the most powerful act is simply to show up. If you suspect someone may be thinking about suicide:
- Ask them directly, with care and concern.
- Listen, without trying to “fix” everything.
- Encourage them to connect with professional help or a crisis service.
- Stay in touch. A follow-up call or text can remind them they are not alone.
